Indexable Turning Toolholders
To measure, shape, or add features like as grooves or contours to workpieces, indexable turning and profiling toolholders are used with lathes or CNC turning machines. They have a machine-mounting shank and a cutting head that holds an indexable insert. They stay put while the machine spins the insert against the workpiece. The inserts feature numerous cutting edges that may be rotated (indexed) to expose a new one when the previous one becomes dull. Without removing the toolholder from the machine, they can be replaced with new ones of the same or a different style that is compatible with it. In large-volume metalworking and fabrication applications with high speeds, high feeds, and difficult-to-machine materials, indexable turning and profiling tools require fewer tool changes than solid tools.
