Exit Signs

Exit and passageways toward exits are marked with general purpose lit exit signs to direct people out of dry, non-hazardous environments such as schools, offices, and commercial buildings. They are hardwired into an electrical system and mounted near exit route doors and doorways to keep them lighted for visibility. During a power outage, signs with battery backup switch to their battery. In buildings with emergency systems that provide power during a power loss, signs without a battery backup are typical. If the way to the nearest exit is not immediately obvious, all signs feature universal arrow or chevron knockouts that can be set up at the time of installation to indicate the direction of travel. Local safety rules may stipulate that lighted emergency exit signs be made of a specified material and feature specific wording and graphics in a specific color, size, and arrangement.
